I'm confused . . .

The past few days have been HOT! So hot, that it feels like summer and I'm all confused as to what I'm supposed to be planting in the garden. I think Next year I need a plan. Even better, I need someone who actually knows what to do to write me that plan and then keep reminding me to implement it.

Last Sunday was a new a new record high for that day at 31.something. And everyday after that has been hot and sunny and beautiful! Cyrus, Sab and I have spent as much time as we could outside, whether it's on the front lawn on a blanket or watering the plants or playing in a bucket of water on the deck.

I love having the kids scooting around half naked and relaxed outdoors. It feels so peaceful. Even the dog and I have a better relationship on hot days because he is so mellow. Probably because he is baking and doesn't have any energy to stick his nose on the backs of my legs. But regardless, it benefits all.

So far I've planted a row of radishes and  small 2' by 2' plot of mustard greens. Also some cilantro, Spanish onions (from little bulbs from Superstore) and some oriental salad greens. I can't decide whether or not to plant my potatoes in the wire mesh again this year as it dries out really fast. Maybe I'll try some like that and some in the garden beds.

I'm being vigilant about watering, but my sprinkler is busted and standing around with the hand sprayer is BORING! Both for me and the kids. When I'm doing it I have Sabrina in the carrier and she gets kind of squirmy so I have to jig around while I'm doing it. Cyrus can't watch me spray for long without wanting to use it too, but he gets bored of being nice and gentle after a minute or two and then he is lured away to power wash some bugs, or the lawn, or something else that really shouldn't be aggressively watered.

The hot weather is confusing me because I feel like I'm so behind with planting! I'm a little panicky because I feel like everything is supposed to be in at once. Did I miss planting the cool weather crops? Should I start my cucumbers? The weather is so unpredictable. We had one week of July/August weather, but now it will probably be raining for the next two months so I don't really know. Once again I am just going to wing it and try and follow what the seed packets say. And try to read stuff.

Today is cloudy and cooler, which is nice and refreshing. We shall see what gets done today.

Happy Saturday!

There must be something in the air . . .

Last night, I'm boring my husband talking about one of my favourite blogs - Crappy Pictures - when he asks me whatever happened to my blog . . .

Well, embarrassed as I was, we looked it up and its still here, and mine. Well. I think I have to start writing again.

Must be St. Patrick's day because that was when I first got the bug two years ago. Two years ago! Wow, time really flies. But not really because I'm still in pretty much the same position as I was two years ago. Except now my son is bigger, and I have a new little human. A daughter named Sabrina who is 8 months and oh my god so cute!

Today, Cyrus (my son) and I turned over one of our garden beds and planted broad beans, which if the packet is accurate, should bear (beer, bare) fruit in about 4-5 months. I am very excited that 1. we actually got outside today considering I've been busy with school work and it was hailing this morning and 2. I might have fresh broad beans in my life this August because, my experience has been that they are very delicious. And I will go a long way for delicious.

So yeah! Nice to be back! I'm looking forward to spring and nice weather and a better garden than last year. Stay tuned . . .

And, of course, the dog still is eating the compost.

That reminds me, I need to give him his second dose of de-worming pills.
